Fire Inspector III Certification
Fire Lieutenat Loren Hughes received his National Pro Board Fire Inspector III Certification while attending a 40-hour class at the Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute.
Incident Safety Officer Certification
Fourteen members of the fire department, Mike Davis, Kurt Christofel, Ed Meyer, Frank Duranti, Dave Fagan, Tony Frost, Sean Daniels, Bob Fischer, Liz Towns, Dave Tickel, Rick Fischler, George Galbraith, Charlie Wehurm, and Kevin Maehling completed their Incident Safety Officer Certification on January 6 – 8. A total of 25 members are now certified to this level.
2011 Firefighter of the Year
The Firefighter of the Year Award is awarded annually to a volunteer firefighter who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department and Mt.Lebanon Residents with regard to fire prevention, fire protection, and/or suppression while upholding the core values and goals of the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department. Firefighter Dave Fagan received his Firefighter 1st Class designation; certification as a Firefighter II, Fire Instructor I, Vehicle & Machinery Technician, and Emergency Medical Technician; served as a member of the SHACOG Technical Rescue Team; and participated in numerous community outreach events throughout the year.
2011 Fire Officer of the Year
The Fire Officer of the Year is awarded annually to the career fire officer who demonstrated outstanding service to the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department and Mt. Lebanon Residents with regard to fire prevention, fire protection, and/or fire suppression while upholding the core values and goals of the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department. This year’s Fire Officer of the Year, Lieutenant Kevin Abbott, was nominated by his peers for his efforts and commitment to excellence. Over the past four years, Kevin coordinated the Department’s efforts towards achieving the ultimate recognition in Fire & Emergency Services Delivery, International Fire Service Accreditation. organized the completion, review, and supporting documentation for over 240 performance indicators covering 10 categories, a four-day peer assessment team site visit, and the cooperation of several external stakeholders, allowing Department to successfully progress on its journey towards becoming one of the elite fire and emergency services organizations in the United States. Kevin was also the first member of the Department to receive their Fire Officer Designation from the Commission on Professional Credentialing.
Fire Officer Credentialing
Congratulations to Lieutenant Kevin Abbott. On November 15th, Kevin was designated as a “Fire Officer” (FO) by the Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC). Kevin earned this professional designation as witnessed by a team of his peers and members of the CPC. Kevin demonstrated through his education, professional affiliations and technical competencies that he possesses the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the fire and emergency services profession.

Fire Officer II Certification
Congratulations to Lieutenant’s Sean Daniels and Mike Stohner who completed their Pro Board / IFSAC Fire Officer II Certification at Bucks County Community College.
Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator Advanced Certification
Congratulations to Lieutenant’s Bob Gaetano and Kevin Abbott for completing their Advanced Certification for Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator. The certification was issued by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) for completion of the training requirements in PEMA Directive 2003-5.
Lieutenant Kevin Abbott
Lieutenant Abbott led the Department through the International Fire Service Accreditation process, serving as the Department’s Accreditation Manager. Kevin was responsible for bringing over 5-years of work together in the required format, for working with other staff members to ensure they stayed on schedule, and for arranging the accreditation visit. Upon completion of the visit, the Department was recommended for Accredited Status and will appear before the Commission on Fire Accreditation in March. Great job, Kevin.
Firefighter Mike Davis
A special thanks and a job well done goes out to Firefighter Mike Davis. Mike took the initiative to head up a group of firefighters that installed approximately 200 hydrant markers over a 3-month period. The reflective hydrant markers help firefighters locate hydrants quickly at night and when they become buried by snow.
Rick Fischler – 2010 Firefighter of the Year
The Firefighter of the Year Award is awarded annually to a volunteer firefighter who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department and Mt. Lebanon residents with regard to fire prevention, fire protection, and/or suppression while upholding the core values and goals of the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department. This year’s firefighter of the year was nominated by his peers, and to paraphrase what the several nominations said, “This firefighter comes to drills, shows up at calls including still alarms regardless of the time of day, performs duty shifts, assists B shift, strives to perform to his very best, and is never involved in anything negative. You never really hear about him because he does what he is supposed to do, is never a distraction, and has a good attitude. His participation is outstanding and he sets a great example of the type of fire fighter that we need to recruit more of.” Congratulations, Rick.
Sean Daniels – 2010 Fire Officer of the Year
The Fire Officer of the Year is awarded annually to the career fire officer who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department and Mt. Lebanon Residents with regard to fire prevention, fire protection, and/or fire suppression while upholding the core values and goals of the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department. This year’s Fire Officer of the Year was nominated by his peers for his efforts and commitment to our community’s children. Over the first five years of his career, he has been assigned to probably the most difficult position in the fire department, public education specialist. In this role, he has delivered over 1,500 fire and life safety lessons to pre-school through 5th grade students, received an award for the public education program from the PA. State Fire Association, and worked with school district staff and administrators to ensure the school program would continue to be delivered in the schools by re-writing the curriculum to comply with the No Child Left Behind Act. He also served as a volunteer member of the department for 2-1/2 years and he brings a positive attitude to work on daily basis. Congratulations, Sean.
