Fire Lieutenant Testing

This is a lateral entry supervisory position requiring substantial fire service knowledge, skills and background.

Job responsibilities include supervision of volunteer staff, fire apparatus operation, fire suppression, fire prevention, public education, rescue operations, and hazardous material and emergency medical response.

In order to be eligible to participate in the selection process, the applicant must be a non-user of tobacco products and must meet the following requirements.

1. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
2. Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
3. Have completed at least thirty (30) credit hours of post secondary education, in any discipline at an accredited college or university.
4. Possess a valid driver’s license.
5. Possess Pro-Board or IFSAC Firefighter II Certification.
6. Possess current first aid / CPR certification.

Fire lieutenant is a supervisory position which requires substantial fire service experience.  The daily routine is very dynamic and may include such diversified activities as building inspections, public speaking and life safety education, fire suppression, training, maintenance, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, emergency medical response, apparatus operation, supervision of volunteer firefighters, and strategic and tactical decision-making.  As positions become available, the Department accepts applications and conducts written, physical agility, and oral examinations per civil service rules and regulations.

COMPENSATION: The 2016 starting salary for a probationary fire lieutenant is $63,882.00. The salary increases every 12 months for the first 60 months to a base salary of $85,176.00. Periodic salary adjustments are negotiated between the Municipality and the Fire Department Wage and Policy Committee.

PROMOTION: It is the policy of Mt. Lebanon to make every job a true career opportunity. Openings in higher ranks are filled based upon merit through competitive testing.

VACATION: The basic vacation is 80 hours after the first year of employment. Additional vacation time is accrued in relation to total years of service.

HOLIDAYS: Eleven (11) holidays are observed throughout the year.

SICK LEAVE: Sick leave credits are accumulated at the rate of 18 days per year. Fire Department employees may accumulate up to 120 days of sick leave.

GROUP INSURANCE: Medical insurance including hospital, surgical, major medical, dental, eye, and prescription plans are provided. Mt. Lebanon pays 90% of the premium costs for these plans. Additionally, Mt. Lebanon provides a group term life insurance policy at no cost to the employee.

INJURY OR DISABILITY: All employees are covered under an insurance plan for extended illness or injury, either occupational or non-occupational.

ANNUAL MEDICAL & FITNESS EXAMINATION: Fire department employees are required to complete and pass an annual medical examination and physical agility test.
